Summer Skiing Means Greater Burn Potential On The Slopes!

If you decided to head to the Sierra and enjoy some summer skiing, be sure to put on extra sun screen!

The sun angle is greater this time of year, meaning the sun is higher in the sky, positioned more over head, increasing the potential for burns. Plus, the suns rays also reflect off of snow. This is called 'Albedo' defined as a surfaces ability to reflect the suns radiation. Snow has a high 'Albedo' reflecting anywhere from 80% to 90% of the suns rays...bouncing it right back at you on the slopes! This, as you can imagine also intensifies burn potential. Surfaces like fresh asphalt have very low Albedo, reflecting less than 4% of the suns radiation. Instead, dark surfaces like asphalt, absorb energy. That is why asphalt burns your feet during the summer! That is also why wearing a black shirt on a 100 degree day is a bad idea! It will make you hotter!

What A Difference A Day Makes!

What A Difference A Day Makes!

Yesterday, Mother Nature did not allow me to grill my chicken! Today, she did! Thank you Mother Nature!

Almost July, REALLY?!?!?

Almost July, REALLY?!?!?

I was really looking forward to throwing some chicken on the grill, but Mother Nature had something else in mind! Hey, I'm not complaining...well not totally. I'm completely ok with the cooler temperatures, but just not the rain! Ugh!

Cooler temps here to stay for Memorial Day weekend

Cooler temps here to stay for Memorial Day weekend

Cool temperatures on Friday will continue into the Memorial Day holiday weekend. News10 meteorologist Mellisa Paul said Saturday we'll see variable clouds through the valley and highs in the low 70s. Snow showers are expected up in Tahoe so if you're headed there for camping, be prepared.

Sunday and Monday (Memorial Day) will be mostly sunny in the valley but more clouds through the foothills and Sierra, said Paul. Highs will be in the mid 70s.

On Tuesday, you'll head back to work in partly to mostly sunny skies and highs unseasonably cool in the lower 70s.

Hot-tomas!

Hot-tomas!

Certainly a beautiful Wednesday in Natomas, without a cloud in the sky! BUT News10's Chief Meteorologist Ken Barlow said some areas hit 90 today, and that's just a bit too warm for my taste. Especially considering, it's not even Summer yet! ((Okay, I'll stop complaining! It's better than the cold, rain, snow, etc...)) Gotta love Northern Cali :)

Natomas Clouds!

Natomas Clouds!

Even with clouds in the sky, it turned out to be a beautiful afternoon in Natomas! I'm actually looking forward to some rain though, these allergies are driving me crazy! But just a little rain :)
