CHP: Driver killed making U-turn across Hwy. 99 in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO – A driver made a fatal decision to try a a u-turn on a Sacramento highway Monday morning, accoeding to California Highway Patrol Officer Chad Hertzell.

Hertzell said the driver of a Toyota sedan was traveling northbound on Highway 99 past Elverta Rd. around 5:30 a.m. when they made a U-turn across the center median, entering the the fast lane of southbound Hwy. 99 at about 5 mph.

An oncoming vehicle managed to avoid the Toyota but a Ford F-250 truck plowed into the rear of the car at highway speed, Hertzell said.

The driver of the Toyota was killed instantly, according to Hertzell. His identity was not released.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Hertzell said the CHP would continue to investigate why the driver made the U-turn.

"We try and go back 24 hours and talk to whoever may have had contact with that driver, see what his mindset was for the last day. By collecting at information hopefully we'll have a better idea of what was going on in his mind when he made that U-turn in the middle of traffic."
