If Annie's Annuals is Mecca, Sunset Mag is Home Planet!

June 29th, 2013: Hottest day in a million years and we garden bloggers hop on our buses in San Francisco and drive to Sunset Magazine Headquarters in Menlo Park! I'm surprised it looks a bit ordinary. I've grown up with Sunset Mag, and it has always seemed bigger than life.

Old City Cemetery Tour - "Misbehaving Politicians" - Saturday, October 5th 10:00 am

Even before California was a state, its officials were busy fleecing the electorate. Pork barrel legislators, fraudulent election workers, dueling senators and land-grabbing governors are just a few of the nice folks you’ll meet.

The cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway, Sacramento. Free parking is available in the lot at 10th & Broadway, across the street from the 10th Street entrance. Tours are free; however, donations are appreciated and benefit cemetery preservation. For more information, call 916-448-0811 or 916-264-7839.

Volunteers needed to Transform Grant High: July 24-27

Volunteers needed to Transform Grant High: July 24-27

The Sacramento Tree Foundation is looking for 250 volunteers during the week of July 24-27 to participate in their largest planting event of the year.

This summer, Grant High is undertaking a massive makeover. For years students have walked along the barren pathway that connects Grant High School main campus to the West Campus.  During warm months it's a sweltering trek and during wet months a long dash for shelter.  During the week of July 24th-27th all of that will change with a massive overhaul and planting party.

The project was conceived and planned by students from the GEO Environmental Science and Design Academy at Grant High School working in partnership with UC Davis Landscape Architecture students.  Their plan includes replacing asphalt with permeable pavement and installing vegetated bioswales to recharge groundwater and filter storm water run-off.
