California Perfume in the Garden

Brush by aromatic sages, sagebrushes, mints, mugworts, and more and be taken back in time to early California. Enjoy a sensory experience of scent, taste, and touch while learning about the many uses and habitat values of these fragrant plants of California. Visitors will be able to take home a baby sage while supplies last. Bring your curiosity and enjoy a wonderfully scented morning in the California Native Plant Demonstration Garden in Sacramento’s oldest cemetery. Free street parking is available on surrounding streets, with limited parking within the cemetery.

Spring Beauties Awaken

Spring Beauties Awaken

Join Historic Rose Garden curator Anita Clevenger and Hamilton Square's Perennial Garden's manager Leslie Hurlburt to see and smell spring flowers that have emerged from a brief winter slumber and are blooming brightly throughout the gardens. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour either or both gardens, spending time with volunteers who created and care for them. The Sacramento Historic Rose Garden recently won the World Federation of Rose Societies' Garden of Excellence award, recognized for the volunteers' work to collect and preserve roses from the Mother Lode and beyond. Hamilton Square has been recognized for its creation of habitat for native bees. Both gardens are nestled among the cemetery's monuments, re-creating the garden cemetery that was established in 1849. In spring, the combination of blooms and tombs are at their best.

Learn everything you always wanted to know about pruning roses. The classes will be held on two Saturdays both at 9:00 a.m. Jan. 23: Repeat Blooming Roses. Jan. 30: Once-Blooming Old Garden Roses. Come to one class or both. All classes include hands-on pruning of the roses.

Come join us in the beautiful Old City Cemetery’s Historic Rose Garden on Saturday, July 19, at 7:30 a.m. for an early morning hands-on event.  (late risers are welcome) Stay as long as you like. We will be removing spent blooms from the many rosebushes and tidying up the garden which encourages repeat blooming of the roses in our treasured Historic Rose Garden.

Bring your own gloves (otherwise they will be provided). Tools and training will be provided and coffee and pastries will be served.

Workshops are free, however, donations are appreciated and go towards the restoration and preservation of the roses and cemetery artifacts.

The cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway, Sacramento. Free parking is available in the lot at 10th & Broadway, across the street from the 10th Street entrance. For more information, call 916-448-0811 or 916-715-7294.
