River City Rowing Club Hosts Head of the Port Regatta

West Sacramento Rowing races Scheduled for October 12th from 8:00am to 1:00pm

River City Rowing Club (RCRC) in West Sacramento will host Head of the Port, in which over 25 rowing clubs from across California will compete in a series of 5-kilometer rowing reces (called headraces) on subday, October 12. Racing will run from 8:00am to 1:00pm at the Port of West Sacramento.

The competitive rowing races are held in the Deep Water Shipping Channel in West Sacramento.  Crews will launch their boats and return to the host club, RCRC.  Headraces are long-distance races where competitiors start one after another in intervals and compete both against the clock and each other.  The winner in each event is the crew with the fastest time, but rowers are also trying hard to pass boats that started ahead of them while avoiding being caught from behind.

Head of the Port includes races for college teams (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Sacramento State, and St. Mary's College) as well as high-scholl aged athletes and masters (adult) rowers.  Over 250 entries will be racing across 48 different events.

To view the races: Best viewing is from the levee on the south side of the Deep Water Shipping Channel.  Follow the signs to RCRC's free parking near the levee on the west side of Industrial Boulevard (just south of the Palamidessi Bridge).  Spectators can also easily walk to the finish line from the City of West Sacramento's Barge Canal Access Point (2100 Jefferson Boulevard).  Binoculars and lawn chairs may help you enjoy the action.  Additionally, North Border Taco will be on site with a food truck.
