Support Sacramento Area Museums During the BIG Day of Giving on May 5!

Interested and involved community members are encouraged to support their favorite Sacramento area museums and/or popular destinations during the BIG Day of Giving on Tuesday, May 5, 2015.  Presented by GiveLocalNow, Sacramento Region Community Foundation, Placer Community Foundation and Yolo Community Foundation, the BIG Day of Giving is a local initiative designed to increase philanthropy in the Greater Sacramento region.  The fundraising effort will take place from midnight to midnight on that one special day. For those 24 hours, online donations will be accepted through www.bigdayofgiving.org with a goal to inspire and unite our community in supporting hundreds of local nonprofits.

Railroad Museum Presents “Trains & Tripods” Photo Opportunity & Lighting Seminar on May 1-2

Lights, camera, action!  California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to offer a two-part “Trains & Tripods Photo Opportunity & Lighting Seminar” for photographers on Friday evening, May 1 and Saturday morning, May 2, 2015.

The unique program starts with an optional, fast-paced and information-packed seminar about existing light photography on Friday evening from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. that will be conducted by former Sacramento Bee photographer and Canon USA Live Learning Instructor Dave Henry.  Then on Saturday morning, a photographers-only “bring your own tripod” photo workshop will take place inside the visually-enticing museum on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (before it opens to the public for the day).   Photographers of all skill levels can choose to attend one or both of the activities.

State Indian Museum Presents “Just for Kids” Native American Book Sale – 4/21-25

In celebration of the Museum’s 75th anniversary happening this year, the State Indian Museum and California State Parks are proud to present a “Just for Kids” Native American Book Sale on Tuesday, April 21 through Saturday, April 25, 2015.

Given the important role books and reading play in shaping the lives of youngsters, this is an important opportunity to provide education about Native American culture -- for now and for the future.  These books help youngsters learn Native stories and legends, and are suitable for storytelling both at home and in the classroom.  With special discounts offered only during the sale, this is a great opportunity for teachers and parents to stock up and save.

The Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band Association presents the annual Carmichael Park Community Band Festival, Carmichael Park Amphitheater. With 15 concert bands, this is one of the largest community band festivals in California for over 20 years.  There will be music from noon to 7 pm Saturday and  11 am to 7 pm Sunday.  Bring the entire family, a picnic, lawn chairs, sun hat, and enjoy two lovely afternoons of music!

Tower Records Project to Present Sacramento Premiere Party for Documentary Film - 4/25!

 

The Tower Records Project, an effort by the Center for Sacramento History (CSH), will present a hometown party following the premiere of the documentary film All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records on Saturday evening, April 25, 2015, at 9 p.m.   The event will take place at Verge Center for the Arts located at 625 S Street.  Sacramento natives, film director Colin Hanks and producer Sean Stuart, along with Tower founder Russ Solomon will be in attendance. Advance tickets for the fundraiser are $30 each and only available online at www.centerforsacramentohistory.org.  With limited capacity, tickets are expected to sell out quickly; 21 and over only please.

California State Parks and Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) are proud to present a vibrant, educational and fun three day event -- “Traders’ Faire - California’s First Mall” -- on Friday, April 17 through Sunday, April 19, 2015.  Offered just once a year, this lively and highly anticipated interpretive event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and offers unique insights into the early days of the Fort when it served as a central and critically important trading post.

From learning more about art to archery or creepy crawlers to deep space, a dozen Sacramento area museums and destinations are offering special summer classes, camps and activities for kids.  

Below is a listing of activities available this summer at various Sacramento area museums in 2015 but space is limited and camps are filling up fast.  Parents are encouraged to connect with the individual museum(s) of interest to explore availability.
