Weekend Excursion Train Rides


California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to announce the opening of the 33rd consecutive season of weekend excursion trains on the Sacramento Southern Railroad on April 2 & 3 and continuing through September 2016. Each weekend, excursion train ride guests can enjoy train rides pulled by either vintage steam locomotive Granite Rock 10 (that returned to service in 2015 after a major restoration effort) or historic diesel locomotives on periodic weekends.

Sutter’s Fort Calls Out for Volunteers

Do you have an interest in Sacramento’s early history? Do you get excited at the idea of recreating pioneer activities like churning butter, making barrels or dressing in period attire? If so, volunteering at Sacramento’s iconic Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) may be just right for you. A new session of docent training classes will soon be available for those interested in helping to interpret pioneer California history to the public. To find out more information and meet current docents, a special Volunteer Open House is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fort located at 2701 L Street in Sacramento.

Railroad Museum to Showcase Award-Winning Photographs from Around the World

In a new exhibit that debuts on Friday, March 11, 2016, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to showcase the impressive award-winning photographs from the prestigious Center for Railroad Photography & Art’s 2015 John E. Gruber Creative Photography Awards Program. With an international flair and a “Be Creative!” theme this year, nearly 400 images were submitted by 96 talented photographers residing in the U.S., Canada, and seven foreign countries.
